The King James Version states this best, “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon” (Matthew 6:24). When Moses came down from Horeb he brought with him tablets of stone upon which were inscribed the commands of God. Simply, that we are to love God completely and love our neighbor as we love ourselves. How difficult is that? The most compelling problem that humanity has faced is its idolatry. Isaiah railed against it as have other prophets all speaking in behalf of God who advised them. Humanity hasn’t changed. Idolatry is still rampant we have forgotten to place God first and foremost even to the extent that we place our family before God.
Consider this: You’re seated in the airplane heading somewhere the flight attendant is giving the preflight instructions about safety. If you’ve traveled much you know it backward and forward and tend to busy yourself with what seems to be more important than your safety. The flight attendant gets to the part about changing cabin pressure where the bright yellow masks fall down in front of your face and says (paraphrased) “adults traveling with small children FIRST put the mask on your face and then put the mask on the child(ren).” Why? If you become unconscious you can’t help the child(ren).
Your relationship with God comes first. If you aren’t spiritually attuned you cannot help your children.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, we have put people and things in front of our relationship with you. Please forgive us. Help us to begin at the beginning and restore our relationship with you. We know that we will begin to restore our relationships with others when we place you first in our lives. In Jesus’ Name I pray. AMEN
